Many times we are asked the question, "What is a clock overhaul?" In our shop a clock overhaul is the most extensive work that is done on any clock movement. Essentially every part of the clock is dis-assembled and cleaned in an ultrasonic cleaning machine with chemicals that are environmentally-friendly. Then each piece is additionally cleaned by hand to ensure that all micro dirt and old lubricants are removed. The pieces are then inspected for imperfections from wear such as cupped gear teeth, worn bushings, worn pivots, worn levers, etc. Once all of the wear issues are corrected, the parts are polished and the plates are lacquer coated to prevent tarnish.
